Liverpool are reportedly interested in trying to sign Alexander Isak as part of a swap deal that sees Darwin Nunez head to Newcastle United this summer.
Isak is in stunning form for the Magpies this season, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League and standing out as one of Europe’s top strikers, with Alan Shearer saying:
“His all round game is magnificent. He is creating so many opportunities, getting shots away. His first touch is fantastic. I think there are three world-class forwards in the Premier League. Erling Haaland being one. Mohamed Salah being another and Isak the third.”
According to Football Insider, Liverpool “will try to tempt” Newcastle to sell Isak to them by offering Nunez in a “player-plus-cash” swap deal at the end of the season.
The Reds are believed to value the Uruguayan at £60m, with Arne Slot potentially not seeing him as an important part of his future plans.
Would Newcastle accept Isak-Nunez swap deal?
This would be a fantastic outcome for Liverpool, considering Isak is a truly elite attacking player who could be about to come into his peak years.
Meanwhile, Nunez has consistently flattered to deceive ever since he moved to Anfield in the summer of 2022, so offloading him and bringing in the Swede would be ideal.
That said, it is hard to see Newcastle saying yes to it, unless Liverpool offered an eye-watering amount of money for Isak, on top of giving them their No.9 at the same time.
The Magpies will surely see the Sweden international as their poster boy for the foreseeable future, and while his future may depend on how successful they are under Eddie Howe, the idea of losing him this year is unthinkable for their fans.
Liverpool supporters will understandably love the prospect of Isak leading the line under Slot, with doubts also emerging over the long-term worth of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, but it may be wishful thinking for the time being.
Should it happen, though, it would be one of the Reds’ most exciting pieces of business in years, with Isak capable of taking them to another level with his brilliance in front of goal.
