Liverpool are believed to be tussling with Manchester United to complete the signing of an “elite” midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to a new claim.
The Reds’ midfield has been magnificent throughout the 2024/25 season, playing a big role in Arne Slot’s side winning the Premier League title last weekend.
Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have shone as Liverpool’s go-to trio in the middle of the park, but Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott have also provided stiff competition.
Despite this, the Reds could still look to add to their midfield ahead of next season, and now a new update has emerged regarding their potential business.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are “tracking” Stade de Reims ace Amadou Kone ahead of the summer, with United also in the mix to sign him up.
It is claimed that the 19-year-old is valued at £20m by his current club “after a stellar campaign in France this season”, adding that he has the “second highest percentage of duels won across Europe this season for players under the age of 21.”
Kone a great long-term option for Liverpool
Kone may not yet be the finished article, considering he hasn’t even turned 20 yet, but he looks like a young footballer with an enormous amount of potential.
The Frenchman has made 21 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, 14 of which have been starts, and Football Economist have said of him on X:
“Yet another exciting midfielder coming out of France, Koné is an elite dueller, able to destroy transitions as they materialise, but also drive attacks for his own team.”
While United are still a big draw, given their status as one of the world’s biggest football clubs, Liverpool are surely the more exciting proposition, considering they have just won the league and their rivals are languishing in the bottom half of the table.
Hopefully, Kone sees the appeal of joining the Reds, not only feeling that he can learn from the likes of Gravenberch and Mac Allister, but also mature into a genuinely key player as the years pass and his all-round game is fine-tuned.
