Liverpool “remain interested” in completing the signing of a Premier League star this summer, according to an update from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Reds have reached an agreement to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz, as one of the club’s most significant signings in history edges closer.

It would be a big surprise if Liverpool were done there, however, with left-back Milos Kerkez expected to seal a move from Bournemouth this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke claimed that the Premier League champions are still keen on £80m-rated Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, even though a move doesn’t feel too likely:

“It’s a move that would be dependent on a lot of factors. If Luis Diaz was to leave Liverpool, whether it’s to Barcelona, the Saudi Pro League or somewhere else, they will be in the market for a left-winger. Anthony Gordon came very close to joining Liverpool last summer when Newcastle were being forced to sell some players because of PSR regulations. Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Gordon and remain interested in him. Newcastle, ideally, do not want to lose him as he’s a key man in Eddie Howe’s side.

“He signed a long-term deal last October after all that speculation over his future, so to convince Newcastle to sell you’d be looking at £75-80million. It looks a difficult deal to do, it will take a huge fee to persuade them to sell. With Champions League football, their PSR situation is looking a lot healthier and they’re under no real pressure to sell their prized assets.”

Is Gordon better than Diaz?

With doubts remaining over Luis Diaz’s Liverpool future, the club have to decide if they think Gordon would be an upgrade on him this summer.

Last year when they were interested, that arguably felt the case, but the Colombian enjoyed a strong season, scoring 17 goals for the Reds, whereas the Newcastle man only netted nine times.

Gordon is clearly a talent, though, scoring against Liverpool in 2023/24 after a terrible error by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and if Diaz does depart, he could be an exciting option on the left flank.

For now, though, the hope is that the current Reds attacker stays put beyond the summer, continuing to be an asset for Arne Slot next season.
