Many Liverpool fans have dreamed of seeing Steven Gerrard become manager of the club and amid Arne Slot’s nightmare second season in the role, it could soon become a reality.

The 2025/26 season has not been the victory parade it seemed destined to be after Liverpool lifted the Premier League title and spent £466million on new signings in the summer.

The league season is now 15 games deep, and Liverpool are yet to win their eighth game of the campaign and are 10 points off the table summit.

Arne Slot, despite the injection of talent in the summer, doesn’t know what his strongest team is and has now created a massive rift with Mohamed Salah, which could see the Egyptian leave in the January transfer window.

Liverpool contact Steven Gerrard for interim manager role

According to a report from DaveOCKOP, Liverpool have made contact with Steven Gerrard to explore the Scouser becoming interim manager should they sack Arne Slot.

The report claims: “Steven Gerrard is under consideration to step in on an interim basis if Arne Slot is sacked.

“Gerrard earlier revealed he was “very close” to returning as Rangers manager but turned down the role after talks following Russell Martin’s departure.

“The 45-year-old previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, winning the 2020-21 Scottish title, before spells with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.

“The Reds are also believed to be admirers of Julian Nagelsmann. The German will lead his side to next summer’s World Cup and could become available after the tournament.”

This could be Stevie G’s chance for Anfield hot seat

Whether or not this is the right move is up for debate but this could be Gerrard’s chance to fulfil his dream of becoming Liverpool manager.

In January 2017, Gerrard became manager of Liverpool U18s at the start of his managerial career. He then went on to manage Rangers and Aston Villa before spending two years in Saudi Arabia managing Al-Ettifaq.

While he enjoyed a peerless career with Liverpool, his managerial credentials are not stellar so, despite his unique connection with the Kop, this would be a major risk for the Merseysiders.
