Liverpool are still seen as the front-runners to sign an “exceptional” Premier League player this summer, reliable journalist Matt Law has claimed.

Hugo Ekitike is on the verge of officially becoming a Reds player, which will then allow the club to focus on other potential new signings ahead of next season.

With Luis Diaz’s future in doubt, a new left winger is likely to be a priority between now and the end of the summer transfer window, but that won’t be the only area of focus.

A new centre-back is also required, following Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen, and Marc Guehi has emerged as a leading option there.

Now, The Telegraph‘s Law reports that Liverpool “remain the favourites” to sign the Crystal Palace captain this summer, despite interest from Tottenham.

While the Eagles would no doubt rather keep hold of one of their best players, they could receive a big fee for him, with the Reds potentially willing to go big.

How likely is Guehi’s move to Liverpool?

At this point, it does feel as though Guehi is a genuinely concrete option for Liverpool, with the 24-year-old now a top-level player who has shone for both Palace and England.

His performances for the Three Lions at Euro 2024 last summer caught the eye of former goalkeeper Joe Hart, who lauded his impact at the tournament:

“Huge shoutout to Marc Guehi. I thought he was exceptional. He really stepped in and was really calm on the ball. I thought Guehi allowed John Stones to play his game. The more Marc plays, the better that [centre-back] partnership will get.”

Barring the potential expensive transfer fee, which could be between £40m and £45m, Guehi ticks so many boxes for Liverpool, coming in as a homegrown player with so much of his career ahead of him.

The defender may not have the physical dominance of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in an aerial sense, but he is a composed figure on the ball, completing 93.5% of his passes at the Euros, as well as averaging 4.6 clearances per game for Palace in the Premier League last season.
