Liverpool are “in talks” with an “outstanding” player over a contract extension at Anfield, according to an update from journalist Abdellah Boulma.
Last season, the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah dominated the headlines, with the former moving to Real Madrid and the latter pair signing new deals.
While transfer business has been the main focus this summer, it is also vital that certain key players are retained, with Liverpool tying them down to contract extensions.
One such figure is Ibrahima Konate, whose current deal expires next summer and who has become such a formidable centre-back partner for Van Dijk down the years.
According to Boulma on X, Liverpool are “in talks” with the Frenchman over an extension, and most importantly, he is “keen” on staying put at the club beyond 2026:
“Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate are still in talks over a contract extension. No full agreement yet, but the French defender is happy at the club and keen to stay.”
Potential huge boost for Liverpool
Sorting Konate’s future is so important for Liverpool, amid rumoured interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-German, with the 26-year-old hailed by Van Dijk last season:
“He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion. He is learning, growing, getting better and looking after himself much better in order to be ready every three days as that’s what asked. And also we have a young player behind him in Jarrell, who is also doing well. We have to keep pushing each other and he is doing a good job.”
Konate is again going to be a massive player for Liverpool in 2025/26, hopefully again staying relatively injury-free and helping Arne Slot’s side win a second successive Premier League title.
At least if the France international’s head is turned in the future, he will hopefully still have years left on his contract, allowing the Reds to demand big money for him.
