Liverpool are the latest club to enter the race to sign Crystalk Palace leader Marc Guehi but it will by no means by a simple signing to complete.

Arne Slot has the advantage of being the current Premier League champion among his managerial colleagues but Guehi has several key issues that may prevent him from making the move to Anfield.

Next season is massive for every player with ambitions of representing their nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and after Guehi played 3,391 minutes for Palace this season, it’s important to him to play enough games to be in contention to represent England.

This is a hard sell for Liverpool as it will be difficult to displace Ibrahima Konate if he stays although his contract standoff with the Reds makes that difficult.

Liverpool have to offer Marc Guehi more than just a lucrative contract

According to Ben Jacobs, Guehi will not accept any deal that doesn’t give him a good chance of being in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for England this time next year.

That said he will not sign a new deal with Palace but he could still remain with the Eagles.

“Marc Guehi is not going to extend at Crystal Palace, that is our understanding and it means there’s two options,” Jacobs told TalkSPORT.

He continued: “One is that he stays at Palace, gets the game time, hopefully gets into the World Cup squad and leaves on a free transfer. And from Guehi’s point of view he is prepared to entertain that possibility.

“Palace on the other hand want to sell him, this is their only opportunity to bring in big money. There could be a halfway house with a January exit of course for a fee, but Palace want to sell.

“Palace have asked in the past for £65-70m and now the asking price is more like £50m, maybe a little bit more with add-ons.

“It remains to be seen whether interested suitors are willing to pay that much.

“Liverpool are the latest club to be exploring this deal. A lot will depend not just on who can agree on a fee with Palace, but whether you can persuade Guehi he’s going to get the game time.

“He’s going to have to understand whether he can get enough game time to be firmly in the plans of Thomas Tuchel and that’s why at the end of the day even if he gets a lucrative offer, the player may actually still decide to stay at Crystal Palace.”

Guehi would be a great signing but if it doesn’t happen, there are other good options

Adding Guehi, an experienced Premier League star with leadership skills, talent on the ball and a proven ability to command and dominate his backline would be brilliant business.

If it comes to be that Liverpool aren’t to be his next club, there are other players that Arne Slot reportedly likes.

Jorrel Hato, Castello Lukeba, Ousmane Diomande and Konstantinos Koulierakis have all been linked and all represent strong options for the Reds this summer.
