Liverpool are reportedly revisiting a familiar midfield profile this summer, with the club once again showing interest in a player described internally as a “Xabi Alonso-type” option who was previously on Jurgen Klopp’s transfer radar.

As Arne Slot continues shaping his squad after a mixed campaign, midfield remains one of the key areas under review, particularly with Liverpool still refining their long-term structure in the middle of the pitch.

The player at the centre of renewed attention is Assan Ouedraogo, the highly rated RB Leipzig teenager who was previously monitored during Klopp’s final years at Anfield.

Ouedraogo was linked with Liverpool as early as 2023, when he was still at Schalke, and has since developed into one of the most promising young midfielders in German football following his move to Leipzig.

Leipzig are understood to rate him highly, with internal expectations that he will continue to grow into a major first-team player, although interest from top European clubs remains a factor.

Klopp connection still relevant

Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Ouedraogo is also influenced by his past links to Jurgen Klopp, who reportedly showed early admiration for the player before leaving Anfield.

There is also added intrigue given Klopp’s current role within the Red Bull group, which includes Leipzig, potentially keeping indirect awareness of the player’s development within the wider network.

That historical interest has ensured Ouedraogo has remained on Liverpool’s internal scouting list rather than fading from consideration.

Leipzig stance on potential sale

RB Leipzig are not actively looking to sell the 19-year-old, and view him as part of their long-term project.

However, like many Bundesliga clubs, they are known to be open to significant offers when valuation thresholds are met, and reports have previously suggested a figure in the region of £40m could be required to test their resolve.

For now, Leipzig’s preference is to keep him for further development, particularly as he continues adapting to senior-level football.

One to watch ahead of summer window

Ouedraogo is not currently being positioned as a priority signing, but his combination of age, physical attributes, and technical potential ensures he remains a player of interest.

If Liverpool decide to act, it would likely be based on long-term development planning rather than an immediate first-team solution.

For now, he remains firmly on the radar as part of Liverpool’s ongoing search for the next evolution of their midfield.
