Liverpool are in the race to complete the signing of England captain Harry Kane this summer, according to former scout Mick Brown.

A recent report suggested that Kane wants to return to England at the end of the season, with a move to the Reds appealing to him.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown has now backed up that rumour, saying Liverpool are one of the options to snap up the Bayern Munich striker, as he looks to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record:

“He has his heart set on breaking Alan Shearer’s record. Coming back to the Premier League is the first step towards doing that, so I think he’ll be looking at his options in the summer.

“He would start for any of England’s top clubs, but can they afford his asking price and wages? There’s been so much talk about it, and from what I hear he wants to come back to England. Man United are in for him, he’s been a long-term target there, but can they afford it? The other option is Liverpool.

“They’re more financially stable and the manager wants to strengthen his attacking options this summer with a new centre-forward. There aren’t many better out there than Harry Kane, so I don’t doubt they’re interested. I think they’d be at the front of line for him if he did become available.”

Is Kane worth the wages for Liverpool?

Kane is still one of the best attacking players in world football, so there is plenty of sense in Liverpool making a move for him this summer. The 31-year-old is a born goalscorer who would likely flourish in Arne Slot’s side, even though he is in the autumn of his career.

The Reds have steered away from signing ageing stars during his era under both Jurgen Klopp and Slot, however, and given the wages that the England skipper will demand, there would be a risk element there.

Ultimately, it makes more sense for Liverpool to plan for the long-term in attack, signing a younger centre forward option to Kane, even though it is clear what a success he could be for a relatively short period of time.

Brighton ace Joao Pedro is one potential example, having been mentioned as a target for the Reds, and at 23, he could lead the line for years to come.
