Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly tussling over the signing of Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram in the summer transfer window.
The Reds were wretched away to Wolves on Tuesday evening, losing 2-1 and succumbing in the final exchanges yet again, as has been a pattern throughout this season.
Alexis Mac Allister is a shadow of the player who has impressed so much for Liverpool since joining from Brighton in the summer of 2023, with his lack of pace at the heart of the midfield a major issue.
In fact, it now looks as though the Reds may be back in for a player who they were linked with at the same time as Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai arrived at Anfield.
According to Caught Offside, Liverpool and United are both eyeing Juventus ace Thuram, with the Premier League rivals both “interested in signing the French midfielder to strengthen their squad and add depth in their midfield.”
It is stated that a deal worth £39.1m plus bonuses could be enough for the Reds to get their man, and while Juventus have “publicly insisted” that the Frenchman remains a key man moving forward, “the realities of modern football finances mean few players are entirely untouchable.”
Should Liverpool go back in for Khephren Thuram?
As mentioned, Thuram was strongly linked with Liverpool in the past, and three years down the line and now 24 years of age, he is a more experienced figure.
He has been hailed by Maurizio Sarri’s former assistant Giovanni Martusciello, who has described him as “extraordinary”, and he has become a key figure for Juve.
A new midfielder is definitely needed for Liverpool this summer, given Mac Allister’s struggles, with the Argentine also backed to join Real Madrid at different times in recent months.
Thuram would add technical quality and legs in the middle of the park, having averaged two tackles per game across 25 Serie A appearances this season, also chipping in with a goal and two assists in the competition.
It could be argued that there are better options out there, including Crystal Palace and England youngster Adam Wharton, but Thuram would be a relatively cheap addition whose best years are still to come.
