Liverpool are in the mix to sign Alexander Isak even if it’s an incredibly expensive and complicated deal to complete as Ben Jacobs reports it’s a deal that has legs even if it will be more about timing than anything.
Liverpool are trying to sell players that are surplus to Arne Slot’s plans for next season but in terms of new signings, he has the one the thing other Premier League managers don’t right now: a proven project and stable club infrastructure.
FSG have successfully poached Florian Wirtz from Bayern Munich and Man City and are hoping to add Isak to what is an already incredible team.
“Isak remains, like with Arsenal, the ‘dream target’,” Jacobs said on GiveMeSport’s ‘Market Madness’
“But Liverpool feel like there could be a window of opportunity in the coming weeks even though we have to respect Newcastle and their position is still ‘not for sale’.
“Liverpool’s perspective is it might be worth trying nonetheless, and what I’m told they are prepared to do, as they did with Wirtz, is offer Newcastle United a guaranteed £100m and then a package overall that may even surpass the £116m that Liverpool agreed with Leverkusen for Wirtz.
“Naturally, Liverpool know that this is a difficult deal to pull off. Newcastle insiders insist that with UCL football that they hold all the cards. Isak is well paid and contracted, and maybe even an offer of £150m, even closer to £200m would change Newcastle’s mind.
“Liverpool may still try for Alexander Isak before moving onto another target.”
Liverpool would further solidify their status as Premier League title favourites by signing Isak
According to Danny Murphy, Liverpool should already be the de facto favourites to win the league next season just based on being champions.
He has a point too. Until a ball is kicked and the likes of Arsenal and Man City have the chance to prove they’re better, Liverpool are favourites.
Yet, having completed deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, the Reds have the chance to take their team into another realm by adding Isak.
“I think so, [Liverpool favourites to win Premier League next year], I think you become favourites once you’ve won it, don’t you, and then you make the addition that they are doing,” Murphy said.
“I know some of them aren’t over the line yet, the big thing is who comes in and who goes out.
“Let’s say, I’m hypothesising here, it probably won’t happen, but there has been some news, hasn’t there, about Isak possibly going to Liverpool as well.
“I know that sounds a bit ‘wow’ but could you imagine, and then all of a sudden there’s not a conversation, of course Liverpool are favourites then.”
Isak and Salah were the top scorers in England’s top flight last season but to put them in the same team would be frightening.
Especially when you consider one of the best playmakers in world football is set to join Liverpool. Wirtz would feast with both Isak and Salah.
And the best part of all this is that Isak isn’t a necessary signing. It would be the biggest statement Liverpool have made in years.
Newcastle United defender Dan Burns recently declared Isak to be the best striker in the world and while that may be premature, he’s certainly on course to evolve into a player worthy of that mantle.
Burns said: “He’s got everything. In my opinion, Alex is probably the best striker in the world at the minute.”
With 23 goals and 6 assists, Isak is on course to become a 30-40 goal/assist per season star and having him at Anfield as he breaks into the truly elite bracket of players would be an incredible move.
