Liverpool youngster Trey Nyoni has signed his first professional contract at Anfield, with a bright future on the cards for the midfielder.
The Reds may be stocked full of great midfield options currently, but Nyoni is still a player who could become an important squad member over time.
The 17-year-old has made one senior appearance for Liverpool, coming against Southampton in the FA Cup last season, but his performances during pre-season caught the eye.
Nyoni scored a beautifully-taken goal in front of the Kop against Sevilla in a friendly in the summer, and he is one of the brightest young players to emerge from the youth system in recent years.
Our thoughts on Nyoni’s maiden professional contract…
This is a special moment for Nyoni, of whom so much is expected in the coming years, with his elegance and quality in the middle of the park catching the eye so much.
He has been capped by England at Under-18, Under-17 and Under-16 level, while Arne Slot is under no illusions as to how good he is, saying back in July:
“I think he did really well today but it was only an hour. He was one of the reasons why we scored the goal, because he turned really quickly and [played] a spot-on pass in between the lines. And he was also involved in the biggest chance in the second half.” The Dutchman also shared his thoughts on integrating the youngster into the Liverpool first team during the upcoming campaign:
“But he’s just turned 17 and his body has to grow, and we are really careful with him. So he doesn’t join every session and sometimes he goes out a bit earlier because he only turned 17.”
It is never easy to predict the career trajectory of any young player at Liverpool, with injuries and pressure having the potential to hamper them, but the sky looks to be the limit for Nyoni.
If he can stay level-headed and avoid injury setbacks, he could mature into an incredible midfield talent for the Reds, proving to be their next great youth product.
