Liverpool are not done with their lavish summer spending but they need to revisit recent interest in Real Madrid forward Rodrygo if they want to match or improve their depth from last season.

One of they key reasons Liverpool were able to dominate the Premier League last season was because they were equipped to outscore any team in the division.

Arne Slot applied his own methodology at Anfield but he retained Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal style but with the current attacking depth at Anfield, the Reds will not be able to mimic that this season.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace were locked in a stalemate at Wembley on Sunday before the Eagles won on penalties but there were promising signs from Hugo Ekitike in attack.

Yet, one Arne Slot turned to his bench to replenish his field on the pitch, he was surprisingly limited despite the significant outlay in the transfer market this summer.

Merseyside football report for the Telegraph, Chris Bascombe, writes that Liverpool need at least one new forward – preferably two.

Liverpool may need to revive their interest in Rodrygo for more reasons than ever before

Reporting via X on Monday, Fabrizio Romano reports that Manchester City are weighing up a move for 24-year-old Real Madrid star Rodrygo but this should send alarm bells off at Anfield.

Liverpool need more attacking depth and Rodrygo is the perfect heir to Luis Diaz on the left flank.

Romano reports: Manchester City are considering move for Rodrygo after imminent exits.

“Grealish gone, McAtee and Savinho can leave… and MCFC see Rodrygo as dream target, Guardiola big fan.

“Real Madrid will let him leave if player wants – asking around €100m.”

After Liverpool beat Manchester City, along with Bayern Munich, to sign Florian Wirtz for £116m, it would be quite something if they gazumped them again to sign Rodrygo but the current squad depth suggests the Reds need another two attackers.

Signing Alexander Isak seems like something that will happen before the window closes with it increasingly more unlikely that he will stay at Newcastle United.

Whether there is still scope to sign Rodrygo – for around £87m – is hard to imagime with the centre back situations still unresolved but in an ideal world this is a signing Liverpool could accelerate for.

Last season, he scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists but is also very hard-working off the ball – a trait highly treasured at Anfield by coaches and fans alike.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Bradley Barcola too but with the PSG star also valued at €100m (£87m), Rodrygo would be the better signing.

That said, reports say Barcola is Liverpool’s dream winger and the data more than makes the case for why.
