Liverpool are considering which attacker to sign this summer to replace Darwin Nunez and their search has them weighing up a move for Ademola Lookman.
This season has been hard to watch in terms of our collective hopes to see Nunez make it Anfield. As much as he frustrates, he also entertains but his time at the club seems very likely to come to and end.
The multitude of reports linking him with overseas moves aside, Nunez has had some extremely tough moments this season not least missing a penalty in the shootout against PSG.
While Liverpool’s European exit by no means comes down to him alone, it was a brutal moment in a season where he has struggled way more than his encouraging return of seven goals and seven assists suggests.
To replace him, the dream replacement is Alexander Isak but even Liverpool believe it may be a deal that is too far out of reach financially to make much sense this summer.
Liverpool could use Federico Chiesa as part of a move to sign Ademola Lookman
Another player who has been linked with an exit this summer is Federico Chiesa, who has played very few minutes despite being fit for several months now.
With Chiesa most likely to return Serie A, Liverpool’s interest in Atalanta star Ademola Lookman could present a prime opportunity for sporting director Richard Hughes to reduce the Reds’ net spend this summer.
According to Italian outlet Quotidiano Sportivo, Liverpool could do exactly that with Chiesa’s desire to return to playing ASAP in order to be eligible for a callup to Italy’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup a key factor.
Liverpool reportedly “dreamed” of signing Lookman in January and are ready to return for his signature.
The report reads: “Chiesa’s name had already been linked to Atalanta in the January transfer window, when the Reds dreamed of immediately bringing Ademola Lookman to Anfield Road, but the Nerazzurri management did not want to lose their jewel in a crucial phase of the season.
“In the summer, Liverpool will return to the attack for the African golden ball, also courted by Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as Juventus and Napoli.
“And Atalanta will not make any discounts: Lookman is quoted at €60 million (£50.4m), however, the Reds could include Chiesa in the exchange.”
