Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs keeping a close on Tyler Morton, who is shining with Lyon in Ligue ever since he was sold by the Reds.

The former Liverpool midfielder was sold last summer by Arne Slot, and many fans at the time said they were sad to see him go. Trey Nyoni is breaking through now, but the decision to let Morton go was made quickly, it seems.

For Morton, though, it has been the best decision of his career so far.

Too often, young players are reluctant to leave a big club when they’re young for fear of not being able to return to the top level once they do, but Morton’s move to France has allowed him to flourish.

For Liverpool, it’s probably a bit of a mixture between being glad a player that was at the club for so long is performing well away from Anfield when he wasn’t going to get the chances he needed, and disappointment at not seeing him do it in Red.

Lyon paid Liverpool £15m for Morton, but would have to pay a lot more than that now to get him back. Morton is under contract until 2030, and has been one of the best midfielders in France since leaving Merseyside.

Now, TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool are considering a “shock” return for the 23-year-0ld, but face competition from six other Premier League clubs, with Morton’s displays in Ligue 1 attracting a lot of interest.

Graeme Bailey reports: “Tyler Morton is generating a huge amount of interest as his excellent form with Lyon continues, with the Reds among a plethora of sides alerted by his performances, though Andoni Iraola’s side is among SEVEN Premier League sides now keeping tabs on the midfielder.”

Regarding Liverpool specifically, the journalist says: “Liverpool have continued to monitor Morton’s progress and club sources admit he is someone they are keeping tabs on, with his form in France even leading to suggestions that the midfielder could eventually return to Anfield.

However, Liverpool are not alone in their admiration of Morton, and sources insist up to seven Premier League sides are keeping tabs on his progress and could be tempted to launch a bid as soon as the January window opens for business in just 99 days’ time…”

Morton was always said to have a bright future at Liverpool before he left the club, with Jordan Henderson hailing him as “brilliant” back in 2021, and he was only an 18-year-old. Even if he doesn’t return to Anfield, it would be great to see Morton back in the Premier League because he is such an entertaining and graceful player to watch.
