Liverpool lost 3-1 to Chelsea on Sunday as Cole Palmer scored his first goal since January but more news about the Reds’ interest in the 23-year-old is emerging.
Arne Slot is set to reveal his vision for the Premier League champions after making just one signing last summer in Federico Chiesa. The Italian is set for a summer of offers after playing just 41 minutes of league football this season and could join Darwin Nunez and Caoimhin Kelleher in leaving the club.
The biggest mystery with Liverpool’s summer recruitment is what Slot’s plans are to invest in midfield. It’s the most stable part of the squad with Alexis Mac Allister cementing himself as a world class player and while Ryan Gravenberch has been a revelation, Dominik Szoboszlai has been incredible as well.
But, reports now suggest that Slot wants more creativity and attacking impetus from his engine room with Cole Palmer being linked with the Reds again.
Liverpool have made contact with Cole Palmer’s agents over a move to Anfield this summer
According to journalist Simon Phillips, reporting via his Substack, Cole Palmer’s agents were contacted by Liverpool, who are investigating a move to sign the Chelsea star.
The Blues are not likely to sell Palmer given how vital he is to the Chelsea side. This season, despite a significant dropoff in form in the second half of this season, Palmer has 15 goals and 10 assists in 42 games.
Liverpool’s interest is described as “strong” but given his contract is set to run until the year 2033 when Palmer would be 31, it will be nigh on impossible to agree a reasonable fee with Chelsea.
Alexander Isak is valued by Newcastle United at £150m so it would be really interesting to learn what Chelsea would ask for a top player with eight years remaining on his £130,000-a-week contract.
That said, Palmer would be an incredible signing
While it remains one of the most unrealistic signings you could imagine, there is no denying that Palmer would not only fit in amongst the world class stars at Anfield, he would vastly improve Liverpool’s chance creation even with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving for free.
Salah woud be the biggest beneficiary of a move to sign Palmer. At the moment, the Egyptian is both Liverpool’s chief creator and primary goalscorer.
Palmer’s arrival would mean that Salah would finally have someone in the final third that stands a chance to assist more goals for Salah than Salah would create for him.
That said, it doesn’t seem likely Chelsea would let him go for less than the €130million (£110m) Transfermarkt says he’s worth.
