Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided a significant update on the future of a “quality” Liverpool player, admitting he will leave the club this summer.

There are expected to be big changes to the Reds’ squad at the end of this season, with a host of new signings coming in and some unwanted players moving on.

At least one new attacker is expected to come in and bolster Arne Slot’s options, with a new striker surely joining, following uninspiring seasons by Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

In fact, Romano took to X on Saturday to claim that Nunez will be leaving Liverpool in the summer transfer window, following three years at the club:

“The plan is clear since February and it hasn’t changed: Darwin Nunez, expected to leave Liverpool in the summer. After offer turned down by the club in January from Al Nassr, all options will be considered in the upcoming months. Darwin, also open to new chapter.”

The perfect time for Nunez to exit Liverpool

Nunez has now had long enough to prove his worth in a Liverpool shirt, with the Uruguayan arguably getting too much leeway from some fans, given his popularity at Anfield, helped by his passionate personality.

Nearly three years after joining the Reds, the 25-year-old isn’t much more polished as a footballer, despite being hailed by Jurgen Klopp last year:

“He had absolutely more than an OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, and he is settled in the middle of the team,” added the German boss. He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest. Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes.”

Given his age, Liverpool should still be able to receive good money for Nunez, even if it’s a loss on the £85m they paid for him in 2022, with the Uruguay international still likely to have some suitors.

A better finisher and all-round striker is needed for the Reds this summer, such as the likes of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, with Jota also too injury-prone to be relied on now.
