Liverpool are happy to sell Darwin Nunez at a “discounted rate” in order to complete the signing of a World Cup winner this summer, according to a new update.

The writing appears to be on the wall for Nunez in a Reds shirt, with the Uruguayan doing little to convince Arne Slot that he is worth persevering with this season.

The 25-year-old may have had moments of quality, including his priceless late double away to Brentford in the Premier League back in January, but his finishing remains erratic and his decision-making is not good enough.

A new No.9 appears to be at the top of Liverpool’s list of priorities in the transfer market, with the likes of Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko mentioned as options, among others.

Now, according to Anfield Watch‘s Sam McGuire on X,  the Reds would be willing to sell Nunez to Atletico Madrid on the cheap if it meant they could sign Julian Alvarez in return this summer:

“Liverpool are open to selling Darwin Nunez to Atletico Madrid at a discounted rate if it helps them land Julian Alvarez this summer.”

Alvarez could be sensational for Liverpool

If Nunez is still a Liverpool player next season, it would be a surprise, and selling him in a swap deal involving Alvarez could prove to be a masterstroke.

The 25-year-old is a World Cup winner with Argentina and has scored 27 goals in 51 appearances for Atletico, combining technical ability with tactical intelligence and a strong work ethic.

Alvarez has Premier League experience from his time at Manchester City, winning two league titles and one Champions League crown during that period, and Diego Simeone loves him as a player, saying:

“When he still couldn’t reflect with facts what we were looking for when we signed him, I said that I was sure he had Atleti’s DNA. That’s why we were so excited then and we are now. Especially because of the way he does things. He won everything by the age of 25 – the World Cup with Argentina, the Champions League and the Premier League with Manchester City, and he continues in the vein of that humility that makes him different from everyone else.”

Alvarez ticks so many boxes for Liverpool, from his age to his team spirit, and he would be a fantastic choice to lead the line at Anfield, proving to be an upgrade on Nunez in the process.
