Divisive Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez reportedly wanted to seal a move away from the club during the January transfer window, proving to be “unhappy” at not getting his wish.

The Uruguayan is now in his third season as a Reds player, but there are many who feel that he hasn’t developed enough as a footballer in that time.

Nunez is still an inconsistent presence in front of goal, while his link-up play can also flatter to deceive, and Arne Slot recently criticised his lack of work-rate in the 2-2 draw away to Aston Villa in Premier League.

“For the second time in a row I wasn’t happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa,” Slot said.
“I can’t accept if a player doesn’t give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was a bit too much. That’s why I addressed it.”
According to Football Insider, Nunez actually “wanted to quit” Liverpool in January, during which point he was linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.
The 25-year-old was believed to be “unhappy” that a “potential deal was blocked”, further suggesting that he sees his future away from Anfield.

Time for Nunez to leave Liverpool

Nunez is a popular figure among Liverpool fans, due to his character and effort levels, with Jamie Carragher praising him back in 2022, saying:

“It’s really interesting watching Nunez. He comes on and he makes a huge impact. He hasn’t set the world alight, he hasn’t done what Haaland’s done and people would’ve expected more for the price-tag. But when you look at his minutes on the pitch and how many goals he’s scored per minute, his numbers are actually scary! He’s actually made a huge impact.”

At this point, it feels like the right time for Liverpool to cash in on Nunez, however, with Slot seemingly not considering him a key starter, and superior options out there to bring in when the summer arrives.

The Uruguay international has a few months to prove his worth, but it would take a lot for him to fully convince the masses between now and the end of the season, having only scored four league goals in 22 appearances in 2024/25.
