Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez is expected to leave the club during the summer transfer window, according to reliable journalist Paul Joyce.

The Uruguayan has been a divisive figure during his time at Anfield, with many feeling that he hasn’t progressed enough during his three seasons there.

Nunez’s finishing remains problematic, as highlighted by his shocking miss away to Aston Villa last week, and his link-up play is a far cry from someone like Roberto Firmino, for example.

According to The Times‘ Joyce, the 25-year-old’s time at Liverpool looks set to come to an end once the current campaign reaches its conclusion:

“Darwin Nunez, overlooked entirely at the Etihad, looks likely to leave in the summer with his progress not having matched expectations so forward reinforcements will presumably arrive.”
Joyce also adds that Harvey Elliott “must reflect on whether he will ever be granted the playing time he craves”, hinting at a potential exit, and the “chatter about Luis Diaz, who has two years left on his deal, moving on is forever seemingly in the background.”

Right time for Liverpool to sell Nunez

Nunez has qualities as a footballer, from pace to power, not to mention being hugely popular with many supporters, who admire his fighting spirit. Jurgen Klopp also showed his admiration for the Uruguay striker during his time in charge of Liverpool, saying:

“He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest. Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes.”

As mentioned, Nunez hasn’t developed enough as an all-round footballer since arriving, so it would be the right decision for Liverpool to move him on.

Arne Slot may have used him sporadically and will have loved his two late goals at Brentford, but he doesn’t appear to rate him highly, even questioning his work ethic recently.

Ultimately, Nunez’s move to Liverpool hasn’t worked out overall, despite memorable moments here and there, and it makes sense for all parties to hand him a fresh challenge in the summer, allowing the Reds to bring in a superior replacement.
