Andy Robertson could have a new contract offer “on the table” from Liverpool, according to a big claim from journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The 32-year-old has been among the Reds’ best signings of the past decade, proving to be a bargain from Hull City in 2017 and becoming one of the most influential full-backs in the club’s history.
Robertson is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of this season, however, and having been linked with Tottenham in January, it feels likely that he will depart on a free transfer.
But speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke claimed that the Reds could decide to offer the Scot an extension to stay at Anfield beyond this summer:
“Although he’d be a free agent it wouldn’t be a cheap deal to do because of the wages that probably Andy Robertson’s on right now. It does seem that Robertson and Liverpool are willing to make a decision at the end of the season and they won’t rush into anything.
“It’ll be Robertson’s decision what he wants to do. I think if he wants to stay at Liverpool, a new contract will be on the table for him. If he wants to move on, Liverpool won’t stand in his way. Robertson at this stage of his career still probably want to play at the highest level possible so I’m sure there’ll be rival Premier League interest in Robertson’s signature.”
Does Andy Robertson still have enough left in the tank?
This is a tough decision for Liverpool, considering Robertson isn’t the world-class left-back he was earlier in his Reds career under Jurgen Klopp.
He still has plenty to offer, however, scoring and assisting in the recent FA Cup away to Wolves and proving to be a good backup to Milos Kerkez.
Robertson’s winning mentality and knowledge of Liverpool are priceless assets – Arne Slot has rightly said the Scotland captain “loves the club” – so there is plenty of sense in handing him a new short-term deal.
It may be that the player himself wants a new challenge, in order to be a regular at another club, but if he said yes to staying for another one or two years, it could be the best outcome for everyone.
