Liverpool are said to be the current “front-runners” to complete the signing of Dean Huijsen this summer, according to journalist Mark Douglas.
The Bournemouth centre-back has shone throughout this season, producing a level of maturity that belies his 19 years, playing a key role in the Cherries’ push for European football.
Huijsen is wanted by some of the top clubs in Europe in the summer transfer window, including Liverpool, and now a promising update has emerged regarding their pursuit of him.
Taking to X, inews‘ Douglas provided an update on the Spaniard’s potential next destination ahead of next season, suggesting that the Reds are in pole position:
“NUFC hold talks with Dean Hujisen’s representatives – but looks like an uphill battle to get him. AFC, LFC (front runners?) & CFC in for him. Newcastle want to avoid transfer sagas & know Champions League football is ‘game changer’.”
A generational addition to Liverpool’s defence?
Huijsen looks like a special young defender with an enormous future in the game, so Liverpool should be doing all they can to sign him.
In fact, if they could acquire the signature of both the centre-back and left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, it would be a fantastic start to their summer.
Huijsen has shone in all facets of his game this season, including averaging six clearances and 2.3 aerial duel wins per match in the Premier League, while Sky Sports commentator Bill Leslie has said of him:
“You suspect that the years to come will be quite rewarding for that young man. I don’t know if he’s had a chance to open his presents but there might be some quite generous offers from other clubs sitting on his kitchen table when he gets home. Andoni Iraola has been saying that he [Huijsen] has not been talking about his future, he’s not thinking that far ahead, but no doubt about it – they’ve unearthed a gem there, haven’t they?”
While Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate should go into next season continuing as Liverpool’s first-choice centre-back pairing, Huijsen could immediately provide stronger competition than Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah.
He is a potentially generational defender, given the strides he is already making at 19, and signing him would be a massive coup for Arne Slot.
