Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign a player who could be considered Virgil van Dijk’s eventual successor at the heart of the defence.
Van Dijk is now unquestionably one of the best players in Reds history, having matured into a truly world-class centre-back and captain.
But at 34, it is important for Liverpool to plan for eventual life without the Dutchman, even though he will hopefully remain at the top of his game for the foreseeable future.
According to Bild [via Sport Witness], the Reds have decided to “join the poker” for Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck, with a move in the January transfer window possible after Giovanni Leoni’s injury.
Meanwhile, Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken has said of the situation: “It is his absolute right to plan his future carefully. We respect that. And I believe that salary is not the most important factor, but rather the perspective, trust, and conviction,” he said. We won’t rush into things. But of course, we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely; everyone is aware of that.”
Can Schlotterbeck be Van Dijk’s heir at Liverpool?
Replacing Van Dijk is going to be an impossible task for whoever eventually does that unenviable job, given his status as one of the greatest centre-backs of all time.
In Schlotterbeck, Liverpool have a strong option to come in and be a formidable performer, though, with the 25-year-old now a 22-cap Germany international – one who is likely to play a key part for his country at next summer’s World Cup.
So far this season, the defender has enjoyed a 90.3% pass completion rate in the Bundesliga, as well as averaging six clearances and 1.7 aerial duel wins per game, while World Cup-winning legend Lothar Matthaus has lauded his international performances, saying:
“Schlotterbeck has developed superbly at Borussia Dortmund; under Niko Kovac he’s become calmer and more confident. After his long injury break, he’s come back very strong. Tah, meanwhile, is now a guaranteed starter for both Bayern Munich and the national team.”
Whether Schlotterbeck would be considered an alternative option to Marc Guehi remains to be seen, but if the chance becomes available to sign him in January, Liverpool should consider him as a strong choice.
