Jamie Carragher expects Liverpool invest “significantly” even if they do win the Premier League title race as Arne Slot prepares his side to make the trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City.

Arsenal gained a foothold in the Premier League title race on Wednesday at a crucial juncture with the Gunners able to move within five points of the Reds by the time Liverpool play City.

Liverpool currently have 61 points to Arsenal’s 53 but if they beat West Ham at the Emirates, they can put the Reds under severe pressure by the time play starts in Manchester. If Liverpool beat Manchester City, they will go back to eight points clear but the Gunners will still have a game in hand.

Slot’s side is starting to look a little tired and unless he rotates the likes of Ryan Gravenberch more, they could run into more problems. The need for further investment in this team is obvious with it now looking more and more likely that Liverpool will be very busy in the summer transfer widnow.

Liverpool need a new centre-back, a new striker and depending on contract renewals and exits, there could be a handful signings beyond that.

Jamie Carragher predicts Liverpool will be busy in the summer regardless of title challenge

Even if Liverpool do not prove victorious in the Premier League title race, they will still have a busy summer transfer window, says Jamie Carragher.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher said: “Whenever I watch Liverpool and Arsenal, it feels like they are still a work in progress. Because so many Premier League teams are in transition, an opportunity has presented itself for the club more advanced in their development to become champions despite being far from the finished article.

“Traditionally, the team who win the title are the one who are hitting their peak at the right moment, the stars aligning as they benefit from the right blend of youth and experience. My suspicion is Liverpool and Arsenal will be much stronger teams a year from now, which means even the eventual champions will think there is much more to come.

“The title will be won by the side who can overcome their current imperfections to get over the line.

“Strange as it sounds, if Liverpool do win the league it would still be surprising if they did not significantly invest this summer.”
