Former CEO Keith Wyness has made a significant and positive claim regarding Liverpool’s business in the January transfer window.

The Reds arguably look slightly short in terms of squad depth currently, mainly at the heart of their defence, having missed out on the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guhi on deadline day.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness predicted some “serious movement” from Liverpool in the January window, with Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck mentioned as an option.

“He’s proven to be the best defender so far this season in the Bundesliga. He looks to be a real talent and he’s the right age at 25,” Wyness said.

“Look, there is no doubt Liverpool are working overtime right now trying to fix this defence. They’ve got to push the boat out in January. It doesn’t look as though it’s going to be Schlotterbeck now, but he could still be one of the targets, certainly.

“I do expect to see some serious movement in January from Liverpool, and they’re going to be spending where they probably hadn’t planned to because there’s some some cracks appearing. They’re going to have to get that defence shored up.”

Do Liverpool need to sign a centre-back in January?

It does feel as though Liverpool would be taking a big risk by not signing a new centre-back when January arrives, with Virgil van Dijk’s availability almost holding their season together.

New signing Giovanni Leoni has already been ruled out for the season after cruelly suffering ACL damage on his debut, while Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez have been known as injury-prone figures throughout their respective careers.

Schlotterbeck could be an ideal option if Dortmund are willing to allow him to leave, but Guehi still stands out as the ideal choice, with the 25-year-old continuing to star for both Crystal Palace and England.

Liverpool shouldn’t panic and sign a player who they don’t see as an excellent long-term option, but equally, not bringing in anyone would feel like an almighty gamble, and Van Dijk would have to stay fully fit for the majority of games to avoid a major issue at the back.
