Liverpool may still be targeting a future move for Marc Guehi, but a fresh claim from former scout Mick Brown suggests the Reds could now face huge competition for him.
The 25-year-old was denied a switch to the Premier League champions on deadline day, with Crystal Palace digging their heels in and not allowing him to leave.
Guehi will surely leave Selhurst Park next summer, however, or even in the January transfer window, with his current deal unlikely to be extended beyond its 2026 expiry date.
While Liverpool will hope to bring in the England international, Brown has told Football Insider that Real Madrid and Barcelona are also among the suitors to sign him:
“Marc Guehi is entitled to assess all of his options. I have heard that the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona could come in for him on a free transfer if he’s going to become available in January. Those types of clubs are always going to be considered because they’re huge, huge clubs.
“He thought Liverpool was the right move for him, he wanted to go there and win trophies. I would be very surprised if his stance has changed on that, regardless of who else comes in for him.
“So I think Liverpool will still be the front runners to sign him, that’s the move he wanted to make and everything has already been agreed between them. It’ll have to be something we revisit closer to the time, because things can change quickly in football.”
Liverpool still the favourites to sign Guehi?
Rumoured interest from Madrid and Barcelona isn’t ideal for Liverpool, but at the same time, it highlights what a highly-rated player Guehi is, and why the Reds are so keen to snap him up.
The hope is that the centre-back still sees the Merseysiders as his ideal next destination, though, seeing what Arne Slot has built over the past year and wanting to play a big part in his side’s future success at Anfield.
The lure of the two La Liga giants is obvious, but Guehi may feel that remaining in the Premier League makes the most sense, in terms of being settled and nailing down his place in the England team.
But as Brown alludes to, it still feels like Liverpool are the favourites to get their man, and if they manage to sign him in January, it would be perfect after the disappointment of missing out on him this summer.
