A fresh update has now dropped regarding Liverpool’s potential signing of Florian Wirtz this summer, courtesy of Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Bayer Leverkusen star has emerged as one of the Reds’ most exciting transfer targets in years, considering he is among the best players in the Bundesliga.
Wirtz would feel like a significant addition for Liverpool, given his world-class reputation, taking them up a further gear under Arne Slot.
Taking to X on Monday, Plettenberg gave an update on the situation, saying that “negotiations are ongoing” over a stunning move to Anfield:
“Not much has changed: the second offer for Florian Wirtz was not accepted in its current form, which is why, as reported, there was still no agreement a few days ago. Negotiations are ongoing. Both teams want a quick agreement, Leverkusen have a different overall package in mind than the one currently being offered by Liverpool.”
Just get it over the line, Liverpool!
Some Liverpool fans will understandably be sweating over the Wirtz situation, considering the saga is just beginning to drag slightly.
To miss out on him now would feel like a massive blow for the Premier League champions, but Plettenberg’s update doesn’t suggest that is the case at all.
Wirtz has the potential to be a game-changer of an addition, whether it be on the left wing, in a No.10 role or even as a false nine, with teammate Nathan Tella waxing lyrical about him, saying:
“As a player he’s brilliant. You know, I’ve worked with him for the last two years and it’s like each day I could just see this guy is unbelievable. It’s no surprise he has a lot of interest in him because he’s a brilliant player, but we trust that the club will make the right decision, he’ll make the right decision.”
Tella’s comments should only further whet the appetite of Liverpool supporters ahead of what still looks a likely move to Anfield, in what will almost certainly be the most expensive incoming signing in the club’s history, usurping the £85m spent on Darwin Nunez back in the summer of 2022.
