Liverpool have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of German superstar Florian Wirtz for a fee in the region of £100m basic plus £16m in bonuses.
For the second time this summer, Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes – with the support of CEO of Football Michael Edwards – has agreed a transfer fee with the Bundesliga club.
Wirtz will follow his teammate and friend Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield after the latter completed his transfer to Merseyside last month.
The rapid right-back replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold, telling his dad on the day Liverpool officially unveiled him as a new player: “Dad, I play for your club.”
The Reds will follow these two fantastic signings with a move to sign Milos Kerkez and with the club now able to divert valuable resources to ongoing talks with Bournemouth, it should be a matter of time before the Hungarian fullback makes his own special move to Liverpool.
That’s not to mention Valencia goalkeeper (signed last summer) is set to arrive for pre-season next month to replace outgoing cult hero Caoimhin Kelleher.
Yet, they aren’t done. These three signings will cost Liverpool north of £200m – the kind of spending we have never seen in Liverpool history – but reports today confirm that the club is by no means finished with their summer recruitment.
Liverpool planning more significant investment after Wirtz mega-deal
Arne Slot has likely barely processed becoming a Premier League champion in his debut season in England and yet he is already close to assembling a squad that should be able to retain the squad and potentially go for more next season.
Liverpool are not planning on slowing their transfer acitivty down, writes the Times’ Paul Joyce, with “further additions” already planned once Wirtz and Kerkez are signed, sealed and delivered.
The Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele corroborates this, reporting that the Reds “still have designs on a No.9 and a defender.” Liverpool do still need a new centre-back, particularly if Jarell Quansah does leave as has been rumoured in the German press this week.
And of course, several outgoings are expected especially if Liverpool do go after an elite centre-forward as reports have continously suggested since the January transfer window closed.
