Liverpool could reportedly complete the signing of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for a cut-price fee in the January transfer window.
The Reds missed out on signing the 25-year-old in a £35m deal on deadline day, even though a deal for him had been agreed and his medical had been completed.
Instead, Palace manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if Guehi was sold, with chairman Steve Parish eventually preventing him from moving on.
It was a blow for both Liverpool and the England international, who was no doubt looking forward to joining the Premier League champions, but it looks as though there is still hope that the transfer could happen in the future.
According to Football Insider, the Reds “will be able” to snap up Guehi for as little as £25m in January, with Palace not wanting to lose him on a free transfer next summer.
It is stated that the centre-back will now “be available for at least £10m less than his original asking price in the new year”, with Liverpool coming back in for him in January “to stave off interest from other clubs”.
A matter of time until Guehi is a Liverpool player?
As frustrating as it was for Liverpool not to sign Guehi, it was more cruel for the player himself, who will have understandably been preparing for life at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
The Reds’ interest in the Palace captain doesn’t appear to be going away, though, and if they only have to wait until January to sign him on the cheap, it will still be a positive outcome.
Guehi has all the tools to be a big success at Liverpool, should he end up heading there, with the Eagles possessing quality on the ball, strong positional sense and years ahead of him to improve further at the top level.
With Ibrahima Konate making a slow start to the season and being out of contract next summer, the Reds need to be targeting a top-quality centre-back to add depth and competition for a starting berth, and Guehi will continue to feel like the ideal choice to come in.
