A “superb” £80m player would prefer to join Liverpool instead of another Premier League club in Janaury, according to a new transfer rumour.
Arne Slot wasn’t exactly backed hugely during the summer transfer window, with Federico Chiesa the only signing who arrived straight away and Giorgi Mamardashvili remaining on loan at Valencia for the 2024/25 campaign.
For that reason, supporters will be keen to see additions come in over the next 12 months, whether that be midway through the season or next summer.
According to a new report from TEAMtalk, both Liverpool and Newcastle United are keen on signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the January transfer window.
The Reds appear to be at the front of the queue in the player’s eyes, however, with the update stating that the 24-year-old would “prefer” a move to Anfield.
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Guehi in January…
Guehi has all the tools to be a success at Liverpool, from his quality on the ball to his expert positional sense, but £80m is a huge amount of money for him, especially with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate already representing great starting options.
If FSG are willing to sanction the move it would still be exciting business, though, especially with Van Dijk now 33 and Konate known for his injury problems.
Guehi excelled for England at Euro 2024, with Alan Shearer waxing lyrical over his displays, saying: “He looked good, didn’t he? I thought his passing was really good. You know when you’re fizzing it into the middle and having to get through and break the line.”I thought some of his passing was superb. He didn’t have to defend too much, but then you’re on the ball and with possession, you need someone like that.”
The fact that Guehi would reportedly rather play for Liverpool than Newcastle acts as an immediate boost, although it remains to be seen if they will be willing to break the bank for a player who still hasn’t yet proven himself at the highest level for a sustained period of time, having never even played in the Champions League in his career.
