A key update has emerged regarding the future of Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, following rumours of a potential move away this summer.

The 22-year-old is living the dream of playing for the club he grew up supporting, but he has also endured a frustrating season overall.

While Elliott is about to win the Premier League title, he has found himself firmly behind the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in the midfield pecking order, as well as Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo.

It has led to doubts about the Englishman’s long-term future at Anfield, with his current contract there running out in the summer of 2027, and therefore gradually edging towards its expiry date.

According to Football Insider, however, Elliott’s “priority is to remain” at Liverpool moving forward, despite his lack of playing time.

The Reds “view him as an all-important homegrown talent with huge potential”, so it looks like he will be going nowhere for the time being.

Elliott a vital squad player for Liverpool

Elliott is such a talented young player and Arne Slot could arguably have used him more often this season, considering not a single Premier League start has come his way, with only 175 minutes played in total.

The attacking midfielder possesses more guile than Szoboszlai, whose power and work ethic get him into the team instead, and the Elliott was possibly Liverpool’s most effective substitute last season.

He will clearly want to be more of a key man, though, with Rio Ferdinand describing him as “exceptional” and Gary Lineker saying of him:

“Liverpool fans of a certain vintage will remember a certain David Fairclough and it seems to me they might, in Harvey Elliott, have found, a new super sub but if he keeps playing like that he won’t be a super sub.”

It does feel like Elliott has yet to fully convince Slot that he is a player who can thrive in his system, so it’s now up to him to show his boss that he is worth persevering with, enjoying a strong pre-season in the summer and continuing to grow as a footballer.
