Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott “intends to” stay put” at Liverpool this summer, according to an encouraging update from journalist James Pearce.
The 21-year-old was the Reds’ hero against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week, firing home a dramatic winner to earn his side a priceless 1-0 win in the Champions League.
It has been a frustrating season for Elliott, however, with the Englishman having to settle with a squad role, falling below Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboslzai and Curtis Jones in the midfield pecking order.
He is still yet to start a single Premier League game this season and his future has been thrown into doubt, with Arne Slot potentially not seeing him as part of the future at Anfield.
“His place in the pecking order has led to inevitable speculation about his future this summer but Liverpool have no intention of selling and he has given no indication he intends to abandon his mission to become a first-team regular.”
A brilliant squad player for Liverpool
Elliott is going to find it hard to become a genuinely key starter for Liverpool, but if he is happy to remain a squad player, keeping hold of him is a no-brainer.
He will clearly want to feature more than he has this season, though.
Elliott is such a talented young footballer who can reach further heights in the coming years, with Mohamed Salah showing his appreciation for him earlier this year, saying:
“He was injured at the beginning of the season and when he came back it was tough with the guys in midfield, but I’m happy for him and to always help him. He’s a great lad and always tries to give his best, even if it’s five minutes or 45 minutes today, I’m happy for him.”
It would be a shame to see Elliott move on, so it is encouraging to hear that he wants to stay put at his boyhood club, and the hope is that he can find further gears, showing Slot that he is worth persevering with.
