Liverpool are one of several clubs around Europe considering a move to sign Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku although there would be a lot of due diligence to do before a move is in the works.

One of the most exciting things about the world class job that Arne Slot has done at Anfield so far is that it’s not even entirely clear what he plans to do with the gifted squad at his disposal.

After winning the Premier League in style with a gap of 15 points seperaring them from second-placed Arsenal, the Dutch manager will now impose his vision for the club on the upcoming summer transfer window.

It’s not likely that Slot will completely overhaul a side that could still compete next season as is. Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving will be a major loss but as the likes of Philippe Coutinho learned the hard way, Liverpool will move on and potentially even improve.

As things stand, Liverpool are being linked with a lot of creative midfielders from the likes of Florian Wirtz and Xavi Simons to the latest link with Chelsea’s Nkunku.

Liverpool have already been in talks with the agents of Christopher Nkunku

According to TBR Football correspondent Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have already been in contact with Christopher Nkunku’s agents as the summer window draws near but they’re not the only ones.

Bailey said: “The player’s representatives are doing their due diligence on options – as Roy Keane would say they are ‘doing their job’ making sure all options are on the table.

“Nkunku has known since last summer that he could leave Chelsea and he almost departed in January, but this summer he will almost certainly depart Stamford Bridge.

“As it stands I am told that a move to Europe is the most likely option – but his people are touching base with clubs in England.

“Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Tottenham have all been spoken to in the past few months.”

Should Liverpool sign Nkunku or would the money be better spent elsewhere?

If we were discussing this before the 27-year-old’s £52million move to Chelsea in 2023, it would have been a straightforward yes.

Now, however, after stagnating at Stamford Bridge for two years, I’m not so sure. He’s still a top player but Liverpool cannot afford any risks now that they have the chance to further establish themselves as England’s very best.

Nkunku has 14 goals and five assists this season which is very good considering he only has 910 minutes of Premier League football under his belt. However, eight of these goal contributions come in the Conference League.

Ultimately, given that Chelsea would demand a huge fee to sell to a Premier League rival and the fact that Nkunku earns £195,000/week and likely won’t want to take a pay cut, Anfield doesn’t seem a likely destination this summer.
