The dream of Liverpool signing Alexander Isak remains alive.
When the news emerged that Liverpool were serious competition for Manchester City and Bayern Munich to sign Florian Wirtz, the immediate reaction was that it pretty much ruled out any hopes of signing Isak.
Even beforehand, supporters had very little faith that FSG were ready to spend anywhere close to £100m on any single signing this summer let alone £150m to sign Isak even if he was the second-highest scoring player in the Premier League last season.
The Sweded outscored Erling Haaland to establish his reputation as one of the best strikers in Europe right now.
And now, reports are doing the rounds which seems to have revitalised hope that Liverpool could still go out and sign Isak and take their squad from one of the best to being ready to compete with PSG for the mantle of Europe’s most elite side.
Liverpool could make Alexander Isak their second marquee signing of the summer and re-break their club transfer record
While signing Isak would absolutelt demolish Liverpool’s reputation as being the Premier League’s most mindful big spenders, his arrival at Anfield would solidify their stranglehold on the title.
Spending £100m up front to sign Florian Wirtz has already increased the quality of Arne Slot’s starting XI dramatically but if you gave the German playmaker a striker as lethal as Isak in addition to Mohamed Salah on the right wing, the Reds would be a truly terrifying team to face.
According to the Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele, a mega-money Liverpool move to sign Isak is not unrealistic and he “wouldn’t completely rule it out.”
As is to be expected, Isak will cost a tremendous sum of money with Steele reporting that Newcastle “don’t want to sell him for cheap”.
But that’s the narrative change from a few weeks ago. The overall narrative has shiftedc from Newcastle not needing to sell Isak for PSR reasons after securing the financial benefits of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Now, it has changed to Newcastle don’t want to sell him unless they receive fair market value which Steele reports is between £140m and £150m.
Verdict
Signing Isak remains an incredibly complicated and expensive transfer but it comes down to what Slot and FSG envisage for this Liverpool team in the next few years.
If Mo Salah leaves, Wirtz and Isak together replace what he provides for the team but if he stays, the can form the most fearsome attack in Europe for two more years and potentiall four if Salah stays fit and effective and renews for another two years.
All in all, £266m total for Wirtz and Isak is mental but if Liverpool believe it’s money well-invested, I’d love to see it happen.
