Liverpool have opened talks with Alexander Isak’s representatives over a move to the club this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 25-year-old scored against the Reds on Sunday afternoon, with the Magpies sealing EFL Cup glory over Arne Slot’s side at Wembley.
Newcastle will be desperately looking to keep hold of Isak come the end of this season, with Liverpool one of those who have been linked with him in recent months,
Speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday [via Metro], Romano said that the Reds have now contacted the Swede’s people, as they battle Arsenal for his signature.
“Newcastle keep insisting in private and in public that they want to keep Alexander Isak,” Romano said.
‘They hope to be in the Champions League next season but, in any case, they want to keep Alexander Isak at the club, so that’s the message from Newcastle. But I keep telling you that big, big, massive proposals will come to the table for Alexander Isak because Arsenal will be there, Arsenal want Isak.
“[Benjamin] Sesko is the other name on the list but, for sure, Isak and Sesko are the main names. Liverpool are also there for Alexander Isak, they already made some contacts with people close to the player, so both clubs are interested in Alexander Isak. For Arsenal, he is the absolute top target. For Liverpool, he’s one of names they are considering in that position.”
Liverpool’s perfect summer signing
It has become clear as this season has gone on that Liverpool need to sign a striker this summer, with their current option not at the world-class level needed.
Diogo Jota was poor at Wembley over the weekend and the goals have dried up badly for him in 2025, while Darwin Nunez doesn’t look like he will ever be the long-term answer. Luis Diaz hasn’t fully worked in a central role, either.
In Isak, Liverpool would be signing a stunning player – one who has been described as the “best striker in the Premier League right now” by Jamie Carragher – with his combination of pace, trickery, link-up play and ruthless finishing making him a nightmare to play against.
If he isn’t world-class already, he is certainly close, and if the Reds could pip Arsenal to his signature this summer, it would be a major coup ahead of next season.
