Liverpool have reportedly suffered a possible setback in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi next year for one key reason.
The 25-year-old was the Reds’ primary central defensive target in the summer transfer window, even agreeing a £35m move to Anfield on deadline day.
Instead, Guehi stayed put at Palace after they refused to let him leave, and there are now thought to be plenty of huge clubs lining up to sign him in 2026.
Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for the Eagles captain, but it remains to be seen if he will choose them, not least after such a dropoff in form this season.
According to a new update from Sky Germany, Bayern Munich chief Max Eberl is planning talks with Guehi over a move to the Bundesliga champions on January 1st, at which point he can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.
He will meet the defender directly, as they look to beat the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid to his signature, sealing the transfer before the 2026 World Cup gets underway next summer.
Does Guehi still see Liverpool as No.1?
Guehi clearly liked the idea of joining Liverpool in the summer, hence agreeing a move and passing a medical, and the hope is that his mind hasn’t changed.
He and the Reds could be a match made in heaven, with the Premier League champions benefiting from adding such a calm and talented centre-back to their squad – one who was lauded by Joe Hart during Euro 2024 last year:
“Huge shoutout to Marc Guehi. I thought he was exceptional. He really stepped in and was really calm on the ball. I thought Guehi allowed John Stones to play his game. The more Marc plays, the better that [centre-back] partnership will get.”
The lure of Bayern is great for any player, though, with Luis Diaz flourishing there since joining from Liverpool, with almost a guarantee of trophies coming their way.
But hopefully, the Reds remain the dream option for Guehi at the end of this season, with the Palace skipper a potentially superb addition for Arne Slot.
