Liverpool have shown interest in signing Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, according to an exciting new update from his agent.

The Reds could be looking to sign a new centre forward when the summer transfer window arrives, having not always excelled in that area of the pitch this season.

Speaking to winwin, Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has claimed that Liverpool showed an interest in signing the 25-year-old last year, but refusing to discuss what could happen at the end of this season.

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer,” Hidalgo said.

“As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is competing in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

A brilliant attacking option for Liverpool

Alvarez looks tailor-made to be a success in Arne Slot’s Liverpool team, possessing an elite combination of technical ability and tactical intelligence.

The Argentine World Cup winner has impressed since trading Manchester City for Atletico Madrid, with current manager Diego Simeone speaking of his admiration for him:

“When we still couldn’t prove what we had been looking for with his signing, I already told everyone, ‘this is why we were so excited’, and we are so excited now. He is a player who makes the difference, he sees things that others don’t see.”

It is hard to find many negatives to Liverpool signing Alvarez, especially as he already has plenty of Premier League experience from his time in a City shirt.

In hindsight, their decision to allow the Argentina international to leave last summer seems strange, putting too much pressure on Erling Haaland to lead the line without enough rest.

Alvarez has scored 10 goals in La Liga this season, as well as finding the net seven times in the Champions League, and at 25, there is still a lot more to come from him.

The player’s agent admittedly hasn’t confirmed that Liverpool are still keen on signing him this time around, but if they are unable to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, Alvarez stands out as an outstanding alternative for the current Premier League leaders.
