As Liverpool eye up potential new signings ahead of the summer transfer window, they have now suffered a big blow regarding one target.
Mohamed Salah’s exit and Cody Gakpo’s form mean that the Reds must sign at least one new wide man ahead of next season, but preferably two, in terms of squad depth.
Yan Diomande has already lit up the 2026 World Cup with a standout performance for the Ivory Coast in their 1-0 win over Ecuador, but another player at the tournament that Liverpool have been linked with looks set to sign for another club.
According to Caught Offside, Newcastle United appears to be winning the race to sign Spain and Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, with the Magpies at the “front of the queue” ahead of the Reds and Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Newcastle are said to be in “advanced talks” to sign the 22-year-old in a deal that could be worth as much as £34.5m, in what is described as a “frustrating setback” for the Reds.
Alternative signings to Victor Munoz essential for Liverpool
Munoz would be an exciting signing for Liverpool this summer, with the two-cap and one-goal Spain international capable of excelling on both wings, and also being lauded by La Liga expert Phil Minshull:
“He is an outstanding young talent. He’s been called up to the Spanish squad and he’s going to be part of the World Cup squad. He’s a very strong, right-footed attacking winger. He can play both sides. He’s very robust. Very physical. He challenges defenders.”
If Liverpool do miss out on Munoz, as appears to be the case, two other wingers must be looked at instead, with Diomande seemingly a leading target from RB Leipzig, amid rumoured competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, PSG attacker Bradley Barcola could be another impressive addition, providing much-needed pace and end product, as Andoni Iraola looks to transform the Reds’ attack.
Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak need fast wingers to get the best out of them, and if Liverpool suddenly have Diomande and Barcola on either flank, or at least similar players, they should look like a different team in the final third.
