Liverpool are interested in signing a “very good” Premier League player before the end of the summer transfer window, according to a new claim from journalist Sam Cohen.
The Reds won two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening, with Arne Slot’s side producing some eye-catching attacking football.
That said, Virgil van Dijk’s absence highlighted the lack of centre-back depth in Liverpool’s squad currently, with a new name needed in that position this summer.
According to Give Me Sport‘s Cohen on X, the Premier League champions are keen on signing Brentford captain Nathan Collins, with the defender a new target:
“EXCLUSIVE: Understand Liverpool hold interest in Brentford CB Nathan Collins. Brentford insist not for sale, and sources say any move is currently seen as unlikely.”
Is Collins a viable option for Liverpool?
Collins is now an established Premier League player who has been a key man for Brentford for some time, making a total of 115 appearances in the top flight in total, and being praised by former manager Thomas Frank:
“Now he has more consistency and his composure on the ball is good. He can find passes in the pockets, the diagonals and the balls in behind. He is very good. This year, he has made some crucial blocks, defending the goal and the box very well. He has just got more consistency in the way he plays. Another important thing is the concentration. I think his concentration levels have gone up and the best players in the world have got the ability to concentrate for 90 minutes.”
While Collins could be a shrewd squad option for Liverpool, it is hard to see a deal materialising, considering he has only recently been named Brentford’s new captain after Christian Norgaard joined Arsenal.
That will surely mean that he stays put in west London for the foreseeable future, with the Reds having to look elsewhere for a new centre-back instead.
Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi still stands out as a leading option, as long as Liverpool don’t have to pay over the odds for the 25-year-old, and there is always the potential to look abroad, too.
