Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has reportedly held talks with someone in his role at a European club over the signing of a “spectacular” player this summer.

Reds supporters will have understood why no incoming business happened in the January transfer window, but they won’t be as forgiving if the same thing happens in the summer.

Arne Slot simply must be backed by FSG at the end of the season, allowing the Dutchman to build his squad and give Liverpool the best possible chance of future success.

There are additions needed all over the pitch, including left-back and centre-back, and while the midfield is full of quality, it looks like they are eyeing a top-quality player there.

El Nacional, Hughes has spoken to Barcelona sporting director Deco about Liverpool signing Frenkie de Jong in the next window.

The La Liga giants are willing to allow him to leave once the 2024/25 reaches its conclusion and the Reds could be ready to swoop in.

The right midfield option for Liverpool?

De Jong is a fabulous footballer when he is in full flow, possessing an elegance in the middle of the park, as well as great press resistance in possession.

The 27-year-old has been hailed by former manager Xavi in the past, who knows a thing or two about what makes a great midfielder, with the Spaniard saying:

“Frenkie de Jong is playing at a spectacular level, he gives us a lot. I think he’s one of the best midfielders in the world right now.”

For all of De Jong’s ability, however, there is an argument to say that Liverpool should look to sign a more defensive midfielder in the mould of former target Martin Zubimendi this summer, in order to provide Slot with a proper No.6.

The Dutchman is also struggling for playing time at Barca for a reason, starting only two league matches this season to date, meaning signing him would have its risks.

At 27, De Jong isn’t getting any younger and hasn’t been without injury problems at times, so ultimately, Liverpool should look at other options instead.
