Liverpool are sending Harvey Elliott on loan this summer but it’s with the view to making the move permanent – not to give him the game time he sorely needs.
Last season, Arne Slot came in and won the Premier League title at the first time of asking but he did it a bit differently to how Jurgen Klopp became famous for.
The German was a big believer in heavily rotating his squad, preferring a large group of talented players. Slot prefers relying on a smaller group of players and this saw Elliott play significantly less than in Klopp’s final season at Anfield.
In the 2023/24 season, Elliott played 2,786 minutes and provided four goals and 14 assists.
In the 2024/25 season, Elliott played 822 minutes and provided five goals and eight assists.
It’s clear to see why the 22-year-old is desperate to leave for game time after Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz for £116m.
Aston Villa closing in on season-long loan for Harvey Elliott

According to an update today from the Athletic‘s David Ornstein, Liverpool and Aston Villa are working on a loan.
In his report, Ornstein writes: “Aston Villa are working to close a deadline day deal for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott on loan, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer.
“Earlier this month, German club RB Leipzig contacted Liverpool over a potential move for Elliott, 22, who the Premier League side valued in excess of £40m plus a buy-back option, or above £50m without one.”
Fabrizio Romano reports that a verbal agrement has been reached!

It’s sad to see Elliott leaving but he does the chance to shine
Elliott is an incredible player but at this point in FSG’s evolution of the Merseyside club, he is no longer able to stay.
At 22, the playmaker has made the brave decision to leave in hopes of finding something exciting and consistent at Villa and in a World Cup year, it’s encouraging to see his ambition.
It’s sad to see him leaving because Elliott has been a really valuable member of the squad even if he hasn’t started as many games as he would have liked in the last year.
Hopefully, he tears it up under Unai Emery.
