Liverpool are in the mix to sign a “superb” centre-back who could be an alternative option to Marc Guehi, a new transfer report has claimed.
A central defender feels high up on the Reds’ list of priorities, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg claiming the Premier League champions are still pushing hard to snap up Guehi from Crystal Palace:
“Liverpool are still giving everything to sign Marc Guehi on a free transfer next summer, with ongoing talks taking place. The Reds are very concrete in their interest – as are Barcelona. However, Guehi are also waiting to see whether Real Madrid make a move. Max Eberl have also expressed concrete interest on the player’s side in case either Dayot Upamecano or Min-jae Kim were to leave.”
According to Voetbal Nieuws [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are interested in signing Sporting CP centre-back Zeno Debast, looking to beat rivals Manchester United to his signature.
He was the “express request” for Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim when he took him to Sporting, which is why he is now keen on bringing him to Old Trafford.
The Reds are also eyeing him up, though, as well as his teammate Ousmane Diomande, Newcastle United defender Botman and Paris Saint-Germain ace Willian Pacho.
Debast a future world-class defender for Liverpool?
Debast is a young player who has already impressed so much as a player in his career, with scout Jacek Kulig describing him as both “superb” and a “jewel”.
Still only 21 years of age, he is already a 22-cap Belgium international, as well as racking up 155 appearances for Sporting and Anderlecht combined, so the Reds would be signing a young player who already has a wealth of experience.
Guehi should still be considered the best possible option for Liverpool at the end of this season, but there is no reason why Debast couldn’t come in, too, especially if Ibrahima Konate leaves.
Eventually, Virgil van Dijk will have to be replaced, with the Reds’ captain turning 35 next summer, and Debast could be the long-term solution at the heart of the defence with the likes of Guehi and Giovanni Leoni.
