Liverpool are battling some of their Premier League rivals for the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs, according to a new transfer claim.
Alisson has been one of the greatest ‘keepers of his generation over the past decade or so, producing astonishing levels of consistency for the Reds.
Now 33, though, the Brazilian won’t go on forever, especially in terms of being at his absolute peak, and Liverpool will need to plan for life without him.
Giorgi Mamardashvili has arrived from Valencia as his backup for the time being, but it may be that competition for him is required once Alisson has moved on.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are one of the clubs leading the race to sign Sunderland stopper Roefs, with Manchester City and Chelsea in the same situation.
It is stated that the Black Cats are “expecting huge offers” for the 23-year-old Dutchman when the summer window arrives, following an impressive season at the Stadium of Light.
How urgently do Liverpool need to sign Roefs?
Roefs’ reputation has skyrocketed this season, with Jamie Carragher naming him in his Premier League Team of the Season to date and saying of him: “I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s had a brilliant start to his Premier League career.”
It is easy to see why Liverpool are interested in the Sunderland ace, with the above report from Football Insider highlighting what an impressive campaign he is having:
“Boasts the second-highest save percentage in the league at the moment, while also ranking inside the top five of goalkeepers when it comes to both saves per 90 and goals conceded per 90.”
Despite Roefs’ quality, Liverpool don’t have a great need to sign him this summer, assuming Alisson doesn’t stun the club and decide to leave at the end of this season.
He is unlikely to arrive on the cheap and the Reds’ summer transfer funds need to be spent on more pressing areas of the pitch, from centre-back to wide attacking areas.
If Roefs remains at Sunderland for another year or two, the timing could then be right if Alisson’s departure comes in the summer of 2027 or 2028.
