A “deceptive” player is “keen” on completing a move to Liverpool this summer, according to a promising update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s imminent exit from the Reds has heightened the need for a new right-back to arrive, even though Conor Bradley is an excellent option.

A host of players have already been mentioned as possible options to come in, including Nottingham Forest ace Ola Aina and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Now, Romano has taken to X to claim that the latter remains a strong target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, with the £34m-rated Dutchman “keen” on sealing a move to Anfield:

“Liverpool are well informed on Jeremie Frimpong situation and how the installments are defined for his €35/40m release clause. He remains one of the main names on the shortlist to replace Trent with Frimpong expected to be eventually keen on the move.”

Is Frimpong a gamble by Liverpool?

Frimpong is undoubtedly a top-level footballer, with the 24-year-old winning the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen last season, also being hailed by former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, having worked with him there in the past:

“He came in and he just blew us all away with his pace and his quality – and his enthusiasm. He’s got a very infectious personality. He’s a lovely boy but he could be quite naughty at times too. He took the plunge to go to Germany and he has excelled and I’m really proud of him. He’s deceptive. He’s small but he’s so powerful, good on the ball and quite different from a lot of fullbacks out there. I follow his career and I hope he gets the move that he wants now.”

There is a risk involved with Liverpool signing Frimpong, however, mainly because he has generally been used as a right wing-back by Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen.

For that reason, throwing him in at right-back for the Reds could have its risks, with the attacking side of his game superior to the defensive aspect of things.

If Arne Slot sees him as an ideal Alexander-Arnold replacement, though, or even an option for the attack, he and Richard Hughes need to be trusted.
