Liverpool are edging closer to completing the signing of a player who “brings a lot of joy”, according to a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds are being linked with potential new signings on a regular basis, with supporters set to be treated to one of the most productive summer transfer windows in years at Anfield.
Left-back and centre-back targets have been mentioned, from Milos Kerkez to Tomas Araujo, while attackers such as Rayan Cherki and Hugo Ekitike has also been mooted as options.
In recent days, a move for Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong has increasingly looked on the cards, and now Romano has taken to X to provide a further update, saying a deal is “close” to being struck:
“Understand talks between Liverpool and Jeremie Frimpong’s camp over personal terms have advanced again today. Player’s always been keen on the move and Liverpool are progressing on salary, length of contract, every detail of the agreement. Deal close.”
A brilliant summer addition for Liverpool
While some may have reservations about Frimpong’s defensive work, much like Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Dutchman still feels like an eye-catching replacement for Liverpool’s vice-captain.
He has been a top performer for Leverkusen over a sustained period now, with Xabi Alonso speaking extremely highly of him as a character:
“Since I got here for the first time, since the first day, Jeremie has been a key player for us and for myself. He’s a great guy. His personality, he brings a lot of joy to the locker room. So you need to keep him having this joy. But as well as become more mature.”
Still only 24, Liverpool should enjoy the best years of Frimpong’s career, and while he has been a wing-back more than a right-back in his career, Arne Slot will hopefully have complete faith in him adapting.
The Netherlands international can also play as a winger, if needed, giving Liverpool extra depth in the final third and potentially easing Mohamed Salah’s workload occasionally.
If the Reds have Frimpong and Conor Bradley fighting for minutes at right-back, it will be a healthy situation, hopefully making Alexander-Arnold’s exit as least problematic as possible.
