Liverpool are reportedly “willing” to sell a trophy-laden player this summer, with a host of Premier League clubs keen on signing him.
The Reds are embarking on one of their busiest and most promising summers in recent memory, not least because of the imminent signing of Florian Wirtz.
Jeremie Frimpong has also already arrived at Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen, while Milos Kerkez is expected to arrive from Bournemouth soon, too.
In terms of Reds players who could be sold, Andy Robertson has been mentioned as a top target for La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, while several attackers could move on, from Federico Chiesa to Darwin Nunez.
Now, according to The Guardian, Liverpool are “willing” to sell Joe Gomez this summer, with the report adding that there are “no shortage of suitors” for the centre-back, and the club’s longest-serving current player.
In fact, Premier League clubs Sunderland, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton, West Ham, Leeds United and Burnley are all mentioned as possible options for the 28-year-old, who has two years left on his current Reds deal.
Is selling Gomez a risk by Liverpool?
Gomez has been such a brilliant servant for Liverpool, now spending a decade at Anfield – more than Alisson and Mohamed Salah, and the rest – and proving to be a dependable member of the defence, being lauded by Arne Slot, who said of him:
“Last season he played many, many, many games – I think you could call him a starter that season – and in some other seasons maybe he was more of the second choice in every other position in the last line. For him to keep doing this probably tells you a lot about his mentality but also what he does on a daily basis in training sessions and at home to stay as fit as he is, because he’s incredibly fit and ready to perform. That is more special than people think it is, that’s definitely true.”
As Slot alludes to, Gomez has often had to accept having a squad role, with injuries also setting him back, so being a regular elsewhere could potentially appeal to him.
Allowing the Englishman to leave would be a risk by Liverpool, though, given his experience and versatility, and if he does leave, it is vital that another centre-back comes in to replace him.
