Liverpool are believed to be interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

The Reds are in need of signing at least one new centre-back at the end of the season, with their options arguably feeling short there currently.

Fortunately, Virgil van Dijk has been an ever-present for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, but he is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konate has had injury problems down the years and has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, leading to some doubts about his long-term future.

Jarell Quansah is still a young player who is learning his trade, while Joe Gomez is another individual who has had his fitness issues down the years.

According to Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are interested in signing Leverkusen centre-back Tah in the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old will be available on a free transfer when his current deal expires in June, meaning the Reds could potentially snap him up on the cheap.

A shrewd summer option for Liverpool

Tah may not be getting any younger, but considering he would be coming in on a free transfer, this could prove to be shrewd business by Liverpool.

The defender won the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen last season, while Arne Slot has spoken of his admiration for him, calling him “maybe the best defender in Germany” earlier this season. Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso has said of him:

“Overall, Jonha is performing at the highest level and I am really happy for him because he deserves all the praise and all the good moments he’s living – that he keeps playing for us and happily for the national team as well. I think he is one of the world’s best defenders.”

If Liverpool could sign Tah and another younger central defender who could be a long-term successor to Van Dijk, it could be a perfect summer in that area, assuming the Dutchman and Konate both stay put.

The Leverkusen ace is now an experienced figure who has won 35 caps for Germany, as well as making 299 appearances in the Bundesliga, and there is no reason why he couldn’t shine for the Reds for several years.
