Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness has made an exciting claim regarding Liverpool’s potential transfer business, revealing how much is available to spend.
After some quiet summer transfer windows in recent years, under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, this summer feels different for the Reds.
Funds should be available to bring in plenty of new faces, while some current players could leave Liverpool, from Caoimhin Kelleher to Darwin Nunez.
Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness claimed the Merseysiders could have as much as £250m to spend ahead of next season, describing it as an “amazing” amount:
“My initial thought was that by extending the contracts of Salah and Van Dijk, that will really eat into the budget. But speaking to Liverpool contacts, they are saying no – they want to back Arne Slot. There could be two or three seriously marquee signings.
“They’re talking about £250million being available to spend, which would be amazing. They’ll be in the Champions League, they won’t have PSR issues – it’s not impossible to see that happening. They could be one to watch in this window. They were quiet last summer, Slot wanted to settle in – now, they’re going to back him. I think they will splash the cash.”
Liverpool’s biggest summer in years?
Wyness’ comments will be music to the ears of any Liverpool supporter, with the fanbase frustrated by FSG’s frugal nature at times during their reign.
While they have run the club well in some respects, including the impressive redevelopment of Anfield, managers have deserved to be backed more in the transfer market.
That must change this summer, allowing Slot to add significantly to his squad, in order to defend their Premier League title and become even more of a force.
Changes are needed all over the pitch, with a younger upgrade on Andy Robertson required at left-back, and a potential Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement also called for on the opposite flank. An additional centre-back is also key.
No midfield signings wouldn’t be a disaster, but one more top-quality name there wouldn’t go amiss, while a new striker is paramount, with Diogo Jota and Nunez not looking like the long-term starting option there.
