Liverpool have made an offer for a world-renowned superstar ahead of a potential summer move, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Reds are preparing for one of their busiest summers in recent memory, with plenty of new signings expected, as well as current players moving on.
Despite winning the Premier League title, additions are still needed all over the pitch, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s imminent exit meaning both a right-back and left-back will be needed.
An extra midfielder wouldn’t go amiss for Liverpool, while a new centre forward is imperative, considering Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez aren’t the solutions there.
According to Sky Sport journalist Di Marzio on his website, the Reds have made a shock offer for Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian is leaving the Etihad at the end of the season and Liverpool are one of the clubs trying to snap him up, with Napoli also among the teams chasing him.
De Bruyne worth the gamble past his peak?
De Bruyne has been an incredible player for City, and one of the best midfielders in the history of the Premier League, being hailed by Roy Keane, among so many others down the years:
“World class. Football intelligence. His decision making. I think he’s been off it a little bit this season but today he was back to his best. He knows what’s going on around him. You’d watch this all day. He affects games. He’s great to watch. He’s always in control.”
De Bruyne does turn 34 years of age in the summer, however, and is clearly not quite the force he used to be, hence City not being desperate to hand him a contract extension.
For that reason, Liverpool signing him would be a risk, especially as he would be on big wages, but supporters could still like the idea of seeing him in a Reds shirt.
De Bruyne is still capable of weaving creative magic, and could be an exciting substitute option, and the fact that he supported Liverpool as a boy could be a sentimental reason for bringing him in during the autumn of his career.
A move to Anfield in the summer transfer window feels unlikely, though, with Arne Slot surely more tempted to look at a younger midfield option instead.
