Liverpool are reportedly in pole position to complete the signing of an attacking player who has been hailed as a “difference-maker” this summer.
The Reds are in a healthy situation in terms of attacking depth, with so many different options at Arne Slot’s disposal throughout this season.
That said, there is no guarantee that all of Liverpool’s current attackers will still be at the club next season, with the likes of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all linked with moves away, amid differing doubts over their long-term wroth.
There is also the Mohamed Salah situation for the Reds to solve, with the 32-year-old still not yet agreeing a new contract at Anfield.
Manchester United are also in contention and have held talks regarding the transfer, but they realise that the Reds are ahead of them in the queue.
A talented young option for Liverpool
Simons is a player with so much long-term potential, but he is already consistently proving himself as a top-level footballer, too, having joined Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain on a permanent basis.
The 21-year-old has 10 goal contributions (six goals and four assists) in 16 Bundesliga appearances this season, while Marco Rose has praised him in the past, saying:
“We know that Xavi is a difference-maker. I said to him right after the game: ‘Great job’. And I don’t mean today’s game, but the way he came back from his injury. The way he worked after his injury and the way he came back, it’s extraordinary after three months.”
Simons also showcased his quality at Euro 2024 last summer, brilliantly opening the scoring for the Netherlands in their eventual 2-1 defeat to England in the semi-finals.
Capable of playing out wide and centrally, the Dutchman would represent a strong option for Liverpool, but much may depend on how many of their current attacking players move on when the campaign reaches its conclusion.
